CANNES FILM FESTIVAL 2017

Day Seven

By Emily Bice, Daily Arts Writer

I took the morning off. No screenings, no writing, just me and a much needed nap.

The day officially started around 2:30 p.m. for the roundtable interview with “The Florida Project” director Sean Baker and actors Brooklynn Prince, Valeria Cotto and Bria Vinaite. With three other reporters, we sat by the beach and discussed what it was like making the film, the directing process and what the film means for the “hidden homeless,” a group of people spread across the nation. “The Florida Project” is an amazing project and the people behind it care so much.

For dinner, Sydney and I checked out “La Pizza” — a staple of the Cannes film festival. The restaurant is in Le Suquet, and serves cheap (for Cannes, that is) and relatively fast food.

The next activity on my agenda was the 7:30 p.m. screening of Michael Haneke’s “Happy End.” Two of Haneke’s films have won Palme d’Or awards — in 2012 and 2009 — and hopes for a third are high. Unfortunately, I underestimated how many people were also curious about Haneke’s newest film. Despite showing up to queue at an hour early, the theatre was already full when I arrived.

An Unhappy end to the day, if you ask me.
